GILBERT CRUM, Lifelong Potter County resident
SHINGLEHOUSE, Pa. - Gilbert R. Crum, 83, of Butter Creek Road died Tuesday (April 28, 1998) in Charles Cole Memorial Hospital in Coudersport following a long illness.
He was born in Shinglehouse on March 15, 1915, a son of Herbert and Josephine Eaton Crum. On June 28, 1946, in Chrystal, he married Doris M. Welch, who survives.
He attended Shinglehouse High School and was a veteran of the United States Navy during World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater.
For many years, Mr. Crum was a self-employed dairy farmer and was also employed by the former Millport Milk Plant. He worked for the Pennsylvania Highway Department. Mr. Crum retired in1977 from the Pepper's Forest Products in Shinglehouse.
Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Onalee R. 'Lee (Martin) Thurst of Portville, N.Y., and Rhonda K. (Ron) Sheppard of Shinglehouse; four sons, Douglas W. (Donna) Crum of Roulette, Wayne R. 'Skip' (Jane) Crum of Coudersport, Merle H. (Darlene) Crum of Port Allegany, and Thomas G. (Carol) Crum of Oswayo; 19 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; tow sisters, Mrs. Florence E Lindsey of Wellsville, N.Y. and Mary Palmer of Gaines; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Crum was predeceased by a grandson, Clinton E. Sheppard; two brothers, Howard r. Crum and George Smith; and two sisters, Winifren Gavitt and Mildren M. Gavitt.
Friends may call today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Virgil Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse. Funeral services will be held Friday (May 1, 1990) at 1 p.m. in the funeral home. The Rev. Christine A. Groeger, pastor of the Chrystal United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial and committal services will be held in the Rathbone Cemetery in Coneville.
Full military honors will be accorded by members of the Shinglehouse American Legion Post 530 and the Potter County Honor Guard on Friday
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shinglehouse American Legion Post 530, Route 44, Shinglehouse, PA 16748; or to the Shinglehouse Volunteer Ambulance Association, PO Box 98, Shinglehouse, PA 16748.
