The Potter Headstone Project
"Preserving our ancestors one stone at a time"
Our Beginning
This project began in the spring of 2009 when a cemetery website I volunteered for had a discrepancy in its listings. Three cemeteries were listed under different names, yet all were located in the same place. Curious to solve the mystery, I visited the site, photographed every headstone, and compared the results with the listings. The discovery was clear: all three lists described the same cemetery, donated from different sources with conflicting names.
The Spark
After sorting and publishing those images, the idea struck me: why not create an entire site with images from all Potter County cemeteries? Such a project would serve as both a genealogical record and a preservation effort, ensuring that headstones—many fading or deteriorating—would be documented for generations to come.
Community Involvement
This project is built on community. By registering for a FREE MEMBERSHIP , you can contribute photos and information to be posted on the site. Members also receive newsletters when updates are published.
Mission Statement
The Potter County Headstone Project exists to preserve memory with dignity and clarity, ensuring that every life is honored and every story remains accessible for generations to come. By combining complete archival data with intentional presentation, we create a space where families and communities can connect, remember, and celebrate those who came before.
At the bottom of each record, you’ll find a form where you can add additional information about a person or leave a comment. Every contribution helps preserve history and honor those who came before us.
