Merlin Dean
SHINGLEHOUSE -- Funeral services for Merlin B. Dean, 74, of Plank Road, who died unexpectedly Friday (April 14, 2000) in Olean (N.Y.) General Hospital, will be held at 11 a.m. today in the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home.
Committal and burial services will be held in the East Sharon Cemetery with the Rev. M. H. Vincent officiating. Full Military honors will be accorded by members of the Shinglehouse American Legion Post 530 and the Potter County Honor Guard at that time.
Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. today at the funeral home.
Born March 15, 1926, in Tyler, he was a son of Meldon C. and Hannah Lewis Dean. On Sept. 3, 1949, he married the former Alta Blue, who died June 20, 1981. On May 19, 1984, in Westfield, he marries Helen E. Hoyt Belcher.
Mr. Dean attended school in Tyler.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II. He worked in the coal mines in the Tyler area and had been employed by the former Clark's Sawmill in Shinglehouse.
He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Knoxville, Pa.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Rose M. Hager, of Westfield and Hannah N. Austin of Shinglehouse; two stepdaughters, Sharon P. Shumway of Bradford and Rosemarie L. Cronin of Mill Valley, Calif.; two stepsons, William M. Pond of Ulysses and Eric L. Pond of Elkland; 18 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Crawford Dean of Corning, N/Y., George Dean of Ulysses and Andrew Dean of Oklahoma; three sisters, Violet Abby of Knoxville, Tenn., Patricia Hand of Harrison Valley and Twila Wood of Westfield; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and first wife, Mr. Dean was preceded in death by one son, Merlin B. Dean Jr.; one great-grandson, Jon Ozy Hager; one brother; and three sisters.
