Rites Held Monday for John Winfield Crooks

Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 13 at the Morton Funeral Home in Shinglehouse for John Winfield Crooks who passed away at his home in that borough at 3 P.M. November 11.

Mr. Crooks, who made his home in Little Genesee and vicinity for 28 years, was foreman for the Iroquois Gas Company until his retirement several years ago.

He was born in Myrtle, Pa., July 9, 1871, the son of Thomas J. Crooks and Lydia Hopkins Crooks. In 1896 he was united in marriage to Elsie Cavanaugh at Ceres. Most of his life was spent in this vicinity and, in 1932 he returned to Shinglehouse to live.

Surviving are; a son, Oscar, of Bradford, Pa.; twin daughters, Mrs. A. P. DeRosia of Titusville, Pa., and Mrs. R. L. Ferrington, Richburg. One brother, George Crooks of Ceres, also survives him, as well as eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Two grandchildren are in the service of their country; Edward DeRosia, M.M. 3/c, Seabee, and Jack Burns, U. S. Coastguard, both of whom are on active duty in the Pacific area.

Burial was made in the Maple Grove cemetery, Shinglehouse, with Mr. Homer Wright of Jehovah's Witnesses as speaker. The pallbearers were: Professor R. L. Jones, Floyd Reed, A. P. Hanks, Fred Phoenix of Shinglehouse, and Ray Newman of Rew City, Pa.
