John Gadsby Killed Thursday, May 27, by Tractor


Mr. John Gadsby, 74, was killed Thursday, May 27, when he was pinned underneath a tractor while engaged in bailing out a gas well owned by the Empire Gas and Fuel Company. He had been employed by the firm for foryu-five years.

Funeral services for Mr. Gadsby were held Sunday, May 30, at the Shinglehouse Methodist Church at 2:30 O'clock, with Rev. Ray Driscoll officiating. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetert.

Mr. Gadsby was born in Bolivar in 1874 and lived his entire life in this section. He married Myrna Swarthout in Bolivar in 1898.

He was a member of Bolivar Lodge of Odd Fellows, of the Alma and Shinglehouse Fire Departments and the Evangelical United Brethren Church of Alma.

He is survived by his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Virgil Stebbins of Shinglehouse and Mrs. Paul Crandall of Bolivar, one sister, Mrs. Elsi Deremer, Oswayo and six grandchildren.

Final Services Conducted For John H. Gadsby



SHINGLEHOUSE, Pa. -- Funeral service for the late John H. Gadsby were held Sunday afternoon (May 30, 1948) with prayer at the home at two o'clock followed by further services in the First Methodist Church at two-thirty p.m.

The Rev. Ray Driscoll, Pastor of Alma Evangelical United Brethren Church, assisted by the Rev. Keith Perry, pastor of DeGolia, Pa., Evangelical United Brethren Church officiated. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery, Shinglehouse.

Honorary pallbearers, members of the Bolivar, N.Y., I. O. O. F. Lodge were: Loyd McCrea, Jesse June, Harry Jennings, Harley Cowels, Fred Bartlett, Elmer Ackerman and Erwin Elliott. Also acting as honorary bearers were the members of the Rebekah Lodge: Mrs. George Jandrew, Mrs Jesse June, and Mrs. Erwin Elliott.

Attending the services in a body were members of the Shiglehouse Methodist Church Mary and Martha Class.

Pallbearers, all employes of the Empire Gas and Fuel Company and fellow workmen of Mr. Gadsby were : Frances Harder, Lawrence Stearns, Claude Crandall, Harry Russell, Gilbert Church and Roger Bump.

Relatives from out of town included: Mr. and Mrs. Paul Crandall, Paulne Crandall, Lois Crandall, Charlotte Crandall, Erma Lou Crandall, Mr. and Mrs Frank McCann, Bolivar, N.Y.; Mrs. Elsie Deremer, Oswayo, Pa.; Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Regis, Carlton Regis, Raymond Regis, Duke Center, Pa.
