Obituary: Lucille Hegele Lanphere "retired educator"

Lucille Hegele Lanphere, 100, of Shinglehouse, PA, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2013 in the Bradford Ecumenical Home, Bradford, after a short illness.

Born May 2, 1913 on the family farm in Mansfield, she was a daughter of Paul A. and Myra B. Goodall Hegele. On July 23, 1940 in Clarksville, Virginia, she married Winfield E. Lanphere, who passed away on June 19, 1985.

Mrs. Lanphere was a graduate of Mansfield High School and a graduate of Mansfield Teachers College (now Mansfield University) with a double education major. She received a Masters equivalent in education from Duke University. She did graduate work at Penn State University, St. Bonaventure University, SUNY at Geneseo, and Elmira College.

Mrs. Lanphere retired in June of 1976 after 30 years of teaching at Oswayo Valley High School in Shinglehouse. During her years in the Shinglehouse school system, she was the school librarian and later after earning a French degree, she became the French teacher. Many students recall the question "Parlez-vous francais?" Hopefully many also remember the correct response, especially those who she took abroad. In 1969, she received the Teacher of the Year award. She also founded the National Honor Society chapter for the Oswayo Valley Junior/Senior High School, which gave her great satisfaction. A life-long learner herself, Mrs. Lanphere led others into believing that learning is something we all need to be doing throughout our lives. The world is ever-changing and our challenge is to meet it head on with chins up and eyes open.

Mrs. Lanphere was a member of Kappa Delta Pi National Honorary Education Society and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma International Honor Society for Women Teachers. Mrs. Lanphere was a life member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association and a life member of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees. She was also a member of the Potter-Tioga County School Retirees Association. She was a former member of the Shinglehouse Board of School Directors where she served as treasurer.

She was a member of the Oswayo Valley Historical Society in Shinglehouse and a member of the former Shinglehouse/Oswayo Valley Lions Club.

She was an avid reader and journal writer and also enjoyed gardening. Mrs. Lanphere enjoyed wintering in Florida with her husband and family for many years.

Surviving are three daughters, Joanne E. Aloi of Olean, NY, Janice A. (Stephen) Hancharick of Raleigh, NC, and Janette L. (Barry) Church of Shinglehouse; six grandchildren, Christopher C. Aloi, Kari L. (David) Drake, Michelle L. George, Jeffrey W. (Renee`) Hancharick, Jason F. (Lori) Putt, and Jaime L. (Drew) Horman; ten great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Lanphere was predeceased by a sister, Pauline Dewitt, who died on September 12, 1997.

Friends may call on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral, 118 South Union Street, Shinglehouse, PA. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Shinglehouse.

A celebration of Mrs. Lanphere's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 30, 2013 in the First Baptist Church, Shinglehouse, with the Rev. Russell J. Horning, pastor and the Rev. Darell D. Harris of Oswayo, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oswayo Valley Memorial Library, PO Box 188, Shinglehouse, PA 16748; the Oswayo Valley Historical Society, PO Box 699, Shinglehouse, PA 16748; or to a charity of the donor's choice.
