Victor W. "Vic" Taylor, Sr. "beloved husband, father, grandfather, & brother"


SHINGLEHOUSE, PA---Victor W. "Vic" Taylor, Sr., 81, of Shinglehouse, PA, passed away Monday, January 5, 2015 at Lakeview Senior Care & Living Center, Smethport, after a long illness.

Born January 19, 1933 on Horse Run Road in Shinglehouse, he was a son of Wayne and Celestia Terrette Taylor. On October 10, 1953 in Shinglehouse, he married Suzanne R. Washburn, who survives.

Vic attended Horse Run Country School and was a graduate of Shinglehouse High School, Class of 1952. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean War era. While stationed in Germany, he was an exhibition baseball player for the Army.

In his earlier years, Vic worked as an inspector at the former Clark Brothers, Inc. in Olean, NY. Most of his life he was a fur/deer hide dealer and scrap metal dealer. In the peak of his career, Vic was one of the largest deer skin buyers in the eastern United States. Along with his wife and family, Vic owned and operated the former Trapper Vic’s Restaurant in Shinglehouse, the building having been built by Vic and his family.

Vic attended Bell Run Union Church. He was a life member of the Shinglehouse Volunteer Fire Department. He loved hunting and fishing. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing baseball. He loved to dance. His greatest love in life was his family, especially his grandchildren.

Surviving besides his wife are six children, Stephen L. (Patricia) Taylor of Salamanca, NY, Vicki Sue (Karmon) Wood of Cuba, NY, Douglas E. (Cheryl) Taylor, Victor W. (Jackie) Taylor, Jr., Darialee “Lee” (Michael) Colton, and Darialyn “Lyn” (Rod) Nolan, all of Shinglehouse; eighteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; six siblings, John Taylor of Lock Haven, Wayne “Buzz” (Marge) Taylor of Wellsboro, Carl (Barb) Taylor of Little Genesee, NY, Rita (Robert) Sommers of Florida, Donna Fetzer of Shinglehouse, and Tresa (the Rev. Terry) Beckwith of Mechanicville, NY; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Vic was preceded in death by a sister, Beulah Edwards.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday and from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, 118 South Union Street, Shinglehouse, PA where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 9, 2015. The Rev. James E. Haddon, pastor of Shinglehouse Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Shinglehouse.

Members of the Potter County Honor Guard will accord military honors on Friday.

Members of the Shinglehouse Volunteer Fire Department will assemble at the funeral home on Thursday evening at 8:30 p.m.
