Obituary: Shinglehouse Doctor Over 50 Years Is Dead
SHINGLEHOUSE, Pa - Dr. R. Wayne Richards , 81 died Thursday morning (March 12, 1964) at his home here. Dr. Richards was born Sept. 16, 1886, at Kasson, McKean County, Pa., a son of George and Cora Warfle Richards. He had been a practicing physician in this area for over 50 years. Surviving are a son, Robert Richards, Los Angeles, Calif.; A daughter, Mrs. Robert (Barbara) Davie of 921 Seneca Ave., Olean, >.Y.; two step-sons, Leslie Githens, Fredericksburg, Va. and Harry Githens, Fort Smith, Ark.; a step-daughter, Mrs. Patricia Githens Hubbard, Wakefield, Mass.; 17 grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Kenneth (Helen) Beall, and Mrs. Olive Richards, both of Bartlesville, Okla. ; and several nieces and nephews. Dr. Richards was a graduate of Clarion (PA.) Normal School and Jefferson Medical College , Philadelphia. He served with the U.S. Army in World War I, as a Lieutenant in the medical Corps. He was very active during his residence here in civic matters in the borough and in Potter County. He was a former burgess of Shinglehouse borough; a member of the Shinglehouse Methodist Church, of Sharon Lodge 598, F & A M; Coudersport Consistory. A.A.S.R. ; Pennsylvania Medical Ass'n; past president and charter member of the Potter County Motor Club, A.A.A.; past president and 50 - year member of American Red Cross; Oswayo Valley Memorial Library; past commander os Post 530, American Legion; Shinglehouse; Potter County Historical Society, vice president of Potter County T.B. and Heart Societies. He had been awarded the Silver Beaver and the Silver Elk Award by the Elk Lick Council, Boy Scouts of America for his great interest in the work. Friend may call beginning at 7 p.m., this evening at the Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday (March 15, 1964). The Rev. Ron Black of Friendship, N.Y. will officiate, assisted by the Rev. George Snow, pastor of Shinglehouse Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Shinglehouse. Masonic memorial services will be held at the funeral home at 8 p.m. Saturday (March 14, 1964) by Sharon Lodge 598, F & A M. Military services will be conducted at the gravesite by the American Legion Post, Sunday.
