MARIA ALLEN

A Former Resident of Clara Died at Galeton. Was 87 Year of Age.

Anna Maria Allen, who passed away at the home of her niece, Mrs. E.M. Dickinson of Galeton on January 18, was aged 87 years. The remains were broughtto Clara and laid to rest by the side of her brother, the late LeRoy Allen.

The deceased came to Clara township above Millport with her parents when a small child, and at the age of three years was trampled on by a frightened horse and her spine injured so badly that she always remained a cripple. She was of a pleasant disposition and always made the best of things as they came along. She served as postmistress as Clara for 30 years, and was a young lady when the U.S. mails were carried from Jersey Shore to Olean, NY, on horseback, and the nearest gristmill was at Olean, grist being hauled there by oxen or on a horse's back. She is well remembered by the older residents of Millport and Clara.
