Kenneth C. Thomas "beloved husband, father, and grandfather"


Sharon Center, PA---Kenneth Carl Thomas, 80, of Sharon Center, PA, died Friday, June 11, 2010 in the Olean General Hospital, Olean, after a long illness.

Born February 21, 1930 in Canal Fulton, Ohio, he was a son of Delbert R. and Mary E. Hostuttler Thomas. On May 25, 1964 in Stannards, NY, he married Carol Lynn Gross, who survives.

Mr. Thomas attended Shinglehouse High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army on January 20, 1948 and was discharged on November 7, 1952. He served in Co D 81st Recon Battalion and Co E 2nd Armored Calvary as an armorer and radio operator. His rank was Sergeant First Class. He received the Army Occupational Medal while stationed in Germany and the Good Conduct Medal.

He was employed by Dresser-Rand Industries for 30 years as a machinist, retiring in 1995.

Mr. Thomas was a member and past Post Commander of the Shinglehouse American Legion Post 530 where he also served on several Legion boards, a member of the Potter County Honor Guard, a member of the Oswayo Valley Rod and Gun Club in Millport, a member of Sharon Lodge #598 F & AM Shinglehouse, a former member of the Coudersport Consistory, a former member of the Allegany County Shrine Club and a former member of the Ismailia Shrine in Buffalo.

He enjoyed spending time with his friends, hunting, fishing, camping, carpentry work and outdoor work at the house he built.

Surviving besides his devoted wife of 45 years are two sons, Kenneth C. "Buck" Thomas II of Dayton, Ohio and Christopher A. Thomas of Sharon Center; two daughters, Monica J. Thomas of Big Lake, Alaska and Mare R. ā€œBeckieā€ Thomas of Kingston, Tennessee; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary (Harold--deceased) Morris of Olean, NY and Elizabeth (Donald) King of Weidman, Michigan; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Thomas was predeceased by three infant sons, Joseph, Michael and Mark Thomas; and a brother, Charles Thomas.

At Mr. Thomas' request there will be no public visitation. Friends are invited to attend a graveside memorial service on Saturday, June 19, 2010 at 10 a.m. at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Shinglehouse, PA. The Rev. Russell J. Horning, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Shinglehouse, will officiate.

Members of Sharon Lodge #598 F & AM will conduct a Masonic service on Saturday at the cemetery.

Members of the Potter County Honor Guard will accord full military honors on Saturday at the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shinglehouse Volunteer Ambulance Association, PO Box 98, Shinglehouse, PA 16748 or to the Oswayo Valley Rod and Gun Club, PO Box 186, Shinglehouse, PA 16748.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse, PA.
