Obituary: Erwin D. (Dan) Maxson “former Shinglehouse, PA resident” CISCO, Texas----Erwin D. “Dan” Maxson, 71, of Cisco, Texas, formerly of Shinglehouse, PA, died Wednesday, July 8, 2009 in Homestead Nursing Home, Cisco, after a long illness. Born December 26, 1937 in Shinglehouse, PA, he was a son of Ernest W. and Fern G. Dickerson Maxson. On July 2, 1960 in York, PA, he married Sara K. “Sally” Murphy, who survives. He was a graduate of Oswayo Valley High School in Shinglehouse. He received his bachelor’s degree in agriculture from Penn State, his teaching certificate in science from Indiana (PA) University, and a master’s degree and a PhD in food chemistry from Texas A&M. He taught science in Pennsylvania and New York schools from 1960 to 1968. He then taught food technology at Texas Tech for a few years and then went into the construction business, building countertops and installing kitchen cabinets and countertops. He then relocated back to Shinglehouse to help care for his ailing parents. While there he owned and operated a flower and cheese shop and was a substitute teacher at Oswayo Valley High School. Dan and his wife retired to Texas in 1999. Mr. Maxson was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Cisco and a member of the Cisco Lions Club. He enjoyed genealogy. He and his wife also enjoyed traveling. Surviving besides his wife are four sisters, Sandra (Gene) Froebel of Olean, NY, Barbara (Don) Adams of Clarence Center, NY, Grace (John) Titus of Greenwood, SC, and Fern (Bill) Carrol of West Homestead, PA; a brother, Ernest Leroy Maxson of Lewisville, Texas; two aunts, Odie Dickerson of Andover, NY and Lucille Maxson of Shinglehouse, PA; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Maxson was predeceased by two brothers, Donald Leroy Maxson and Michael Ernest Maxson. A memorial service will be held at a date and place to be announced. Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Shinglehouse, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, PO Box 9, Cisco, TX 76437, the Cisco Public Library, 600 Avenue G, Cisco, TX 76437, the Texas Lions Camp, PO Box 290247, Kerrville, TX 78029 or to the Oswayo Valley Memorial Library, PO Box 188, Shinglehouse, PA 16748. Arrangements are under the direction of the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse, PA.
