Clayton R. Norton, a resident of Shinglehouse for the past forty-five years and well known throughout this area as a stonemason, died in the Olean General Hospital Tuesday night, January 25, after a long illness.
Mr. Norton had lived in Little Genesee for about eight years, and was employed by the Segar-Prindle Mfg. Co.
Mr. Norton was born in Wellsville May 30, 1884, the son of Lafayette and Mary Norton and was married to Merit Tubbs April 27, 1902 in Shinglehouse.
Mr. Norton was for twenty-five years an employee of the Pennsylvania Game Commission as a game protector in that area. He served for three years as superintendent of the Skinner Creek Conservation Corps camp. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Shinglehouse, of the Shinglehouse Volunteer Fire Department and of Sharon Grange.
Surviving are his widow; six daughters, Mrs. Leila Genove and Mrs. Marjorie Miller, Niagara Falls, N.Y., Mrs. Ethel Seager, Richburg, Mr. Lucille Olver, Depew, Mrs. Betty Young, Dunkirk, and Miss Ruth Norton of Erie, Pa.; one son William Norton, Shinglehouse; sixteen grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Maude Newell, Toledo, Ohio, and Mrs. Beatrice Hawks, Shinglehouse; three brothers, Clair Norton, Port Allegany, Lester Norton of Shinglehouse and Bernard Norton, Lima, Ohio; one aunt, Miss Della Loomis, Wellsville, and several nieces and nephews.
The body was removed to McLaughlin Home for Funerals where friends may call and where a prayer service will be held Friday afternoon, Jan. 28, at one-thirty o'clock.
Funeral services will be held at two o'clock at the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Don L. Moody will officiate and burial will be in the family plot in Maple Grove Cemetery.
